A-ha Hunting High And Low Deluxe Edition Blogspot
Details of the 30th anniversary super deluxe edition box set of Hunting High and Low, ‘s 1985 debut album, have finally been officially confirmed, seven months to the fact that the project was happening. This deluxe box contains four CDs and a DVD, and when compared to the two-CD deluxe of 2010, essentially offers more demos, more remixes and more alternate versions. The first CD now reverts to ‘just’ the 10-track album, with the four bonus cuts from the previous deluxe evacuated and relocated to disc three of this new set. Disc 2 is packed with demos – almost all of the previous ones, plus a few extra including four “Naersnes” Demos and a second demo of The Blue Sky. I say ‘almost’ because the ‘slow version demo’ of the title track isn’t included here. The third CD concerns itself with commercially released material: edits, remixes, dubs, second twelve-inch mixes, and the like. This is much more comprehensive than before – with a full set of seven-inch remixes plus the dub mix of Train of Thought, and those pesky digital bonus tracks are now included as part of the physical offering.

Haven’t checked in for a while as I’ve been travelling. As soon as I saw that there was an SDE of ‘Hunting’ due for release I thought “Oh there had better be a 5.1 mix on it or there is going to be a lot of unhappy folks” and sure enough. Personally speaking, I don’t have a 5.1 system so I am pretty happy with this actually – it seems pretty exhaustive, contains demos (which I love), no live cuts (which I tend not to like as much without the visuals) and does not go overboard on mixes. The one thing I would change/add would be more video content on the DVD which, as others have mentioned, seems pretty light.
Maybe a contemporaneous live set would have been a nice addition. I’m not sure how much works goes into a 5.1 mix but maybe the record company didn’t have the appetite for it (and sometimes they get released separately as a money grab although I guess Paul would know about it by now if it were happening). Thanks for the info Paul as always. The 2010 Albert Hall show was not filmed although you can watch superb edits of the various audience-shot footage paired with the BBC audio on youtube. I agree this was a missed opportunity to include the audio of the Albert Hall HHAL performance. As for the discs full of remixesam I the only person who finds these incredibly tedious?
They’re one-listen out-of-curiosity affairs. There’s a wealth of professionally recorded concerts from throughout the band’s career.
I would WAY rather have stuff like that included on a set like this. Despite being a huge fan I think the deluxe 2CD set already included everything I care to own. Special Feature / Bonus Track: bonus track(s). A question to all the a-ha fans out there: after a quick check, these are the new songs/mixes/demos which were not on the 2010 two disc deluxe edition, is that right? CD2 – song 2 presenting lily mars (naersnes demo) CD2 – song 3 sa blaster det pa jorden (naersnes demo) CD2 – song 4 the sphinx (naersnes demo) CD2 – song 5 living a boy’s adventure tale (naersnes demo) CD2 – song 13 the blue sky (demo) CD2 – song 22 the blue sky (2nd demo) CD2 – song 25 presenting lily mars (rendezvous demo) CD3 – song 2 take on me (1984 12″ mix) CD3 – song 4 take on me (1985 12″ mix) CD3 – song 5 take on me (instrumental mix) CD3 – song 6 the sun always shines on t.v. (7″ mix) CD3 – song 9 the sun always shines on t.v. (extended version) CD 3 – song 10 the sun always shines on t.v.
(instrumental) CD 3 – song 11 train of thought (7″ remix) CD 3 – song 13 train of thought (dub mix) CD 4 – song 14 hunting high and low (7″ remix) CD 5 – all songs except song 5 living a boy’s adventure tale (early mix) am i right? I got a bit confused with the two versions of “presenting lily mars” and also with the extended versions of “the sun always shines on t.v.” not sure which is which as there is no info which feature on the 2010 edition. Well, the flexi disc was “only” an edit of the steve Thompson remix with the A-ha member talking a little on the repeated intro Maybe they just forgot having done this! If the introduction part is very rare, it’s easy to redo the edit (I did it already) Well, maybe we could ask Warner to make this edition perfect?!
I think that’s the only thing missing with now the appearance of the first 12″ version of “Take On Me”. I’m really pleased with this extended play, and I hope they’ll do the same with the 3 next albums! Cross fingers. “I’m kind of relieved there’s no 5.1 as I was disappointed with the Tears for Fears one.” I don’t get that: many people said the 5.1 was reference and clearly enjoyed it. Even if you’re disappointed by this one mix, that doesn’t say anything about 5.1 done by somebody else (Steven Wilson is a prog musicianeven if a-ha were doing some quite complex things on tracks like the title song or “The Sun Always Shines on TV” he wouldn’t do it, me reckons) and certainly it would be just one element to be possibly disappointed.
Anyone who dismissed a-ha as a one-hit wonder must have missed out on the band's fine debut, Hunting High and Low. Though the band spawned many further hits across the rest of the world, 'Take on Me' exploded in the States and the group never cracked the top of the charts again. It's a shame, because the album contains a handful of songs that nearly match the manic energy and emotional crack of its big hit. Further, it's a cohesive album with smart pace changeups, and it rarely fails to delight or satisfy a listener's need for a synth pop fix.
The opening kick is a huge one: 'Take on Me' is a new wave classic laced with rushing keyboards, made emotionally resonant thanks to Morten Harket's touching vocal delicacy. It didn't hurt in the era of MTV that the song's video was a hyperkinetic blend of mind-warping animation and filmed footage with a romantic thriller's heart.
Harket's hunky physique and cheekbones also didn't hurt the video's chances at heavy rotation. Getting past that video, 'The Sun Always Shines on T.V.' Is just as thrilling. Starting as a sad ballad, it explodes into something much more, as chugging guitars and operatic synths keep pace with Harket's evocative vocal stylings. If ever a 1980s song qualified as Wall of Sound, 'The Sun Always Shines on T.V.' The remainder of the album sees a-ha switching deftly back and forth between dramatic overtures and classic new wave keyboard motifs.
'Train of Thought' and 'Love Is Reason' are reminiscent of early Depeche Mode or Camouflage, but Harket's rich voice and flair make them purely a-ha. The band explores decidedly European terrain in the theatrical 'Hunting High and Low' and dances a pop waltz with the sweet 'Living a Boy's Adventure Tale,' coming across like a marriage between the Blue Nile and Alphaville. Delightful song snippets 'The Blue Sky' and 'And You Tell Me' act as frosting on the cake or as glue between the theater and the dancefloor.

A-ha Hunting High And Low Deluxe Edition
One can't escape the feeling that Hunting High and Low is a product of the 1980s, but with highs like 'Take on Me' and 'The Sun Always Shines on T.V.,' and no lows in sight, a-ha's debut is a treat worth relishing. Tim DiGravina.
